Gracing the cover of EBONY’s December issue, Latto, the 26-year-old rapper known to many as the reigning queen of Atlanta rap, sat down with us to talk about the impact Atlanta has had on her music and upbringing.
Of course, when you think of the city that oozes SpottieOttieDopalisciousness 24-7, you have to think of more than just the music scene. You think of a movement. A pulse that’s deeply rooted in history, yet constantly evolving with the times.
Atlanta is a birthplace for trends, sounds and moments that have echoed far beyond I-285 aka “The Perimeter.” It’s no surprise that Atlanta has shaped the careers of some of the biggest artists in the world today. It’s a place where people come to live out their dreams—and where the soul of the city can be felt at every corner.
A History You Can Feel
Atlanta’s rich history is woven into the fabric of its neighborhoods and institutions. At The King Center, the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. are honored, while his childhood home in the Old Fourth Ward stands as a testament to his transformative impact. Nearby, the Atlanta University Center houses the largest cluster of HBCUs—Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, Spelman College, Clark-Atlanta University, Morris Brown College and Interdenominational Theological Seminary—which have shaped Black intellectual thought for generations.

The Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. King and his father pastored, remains a symbol of the city’s commitment to equality and change. These sites are not just for tourists; they are living legacies of Atlanta’s role in shaping social progress.
The Soul of Atlanta
When it comes to music, as Andre 3000 notoriously said, “The South got something to say.” The city’s sound has influenced artists worldwide, and nearly every night, there’s a venue somewhere in the city hosting live performances, DJ sets and jam sessions. From the intimate vibe of Apache Cafe, where local musicians gather to showcase their talent, to the upscale energy of TEN ATL Bar & Lounge, the city’s music scene is as dynamic as the artists who call it home.
Beyond the Streets: Parks, Art, and The BeltLine
The city’s outdoor spaces and art scene are integral to its character. The BeltLine, once an old railroad corridor, is now a hub for pedestrians, cyclists and artists looking to dine, shop, and enjoy nature. Piedmont Park, Grant Park, and Centennial Olympic Park offer spacious green spaces for relaxation.

Atlanta’s art scene thrives at venues like the High Museum of Art and independent galleries and museums like Hammonds House Museum that highlight both established and emerging artists from across the diaspora.
Where Flavor Meets Culture
Can you even think about Atlanta without thinking about cuisine? Its food is an expression of the culture. The city’s culinary landscape is deeply rooted in Southern traditions, with a modern twist. Local favorites like Breakfast at Barney’s serve soul food and seafood brunch all day, in a community-driven atmosphere, while Busy Bee Café offers comfort with Southern classics. Paschal’s, a historic Civil Rights-era restaurant, is known for fried chicken and barbecue, and Old Lady Gang brings Southern flavors into the contemporary dining scene. For a taste of Atlanta’s international influences, head to Buford Highway, where Ethiopian, Korean, Vietnamese, and Mexican restaurants reflect the city’s diverse population.

Don’t think we forgot about the wings, a beloved classic that sparks endless debates: American Deli or J.R. Crickets? Flats or drums? Lemon pepper or hot? You decide.
The Magic of the A
For locals and travelers alike, Atlanta is a canvas painted with iconic landmarks, mouthwatering food, and live entertainment that feeds the soul. It’s a place that invites you to explore its energy, feel its pulse, and experience the magic that makes it unique. Atlanta leaves a lasting impression, making you feel right at home in the heart of the South. As they famously say, “Atlanta influences everything.”
